Periodontal disease is common in adults and is the chief cause of tooth loss in adults.
Periodontal disease starts when the space between the tooth and gums (the sulcus or pocket) becomes filled with bacteria, plaque and tartar, causing inflammation , gum bleeding and irritation to the neighboring tissues. If these aggravations are not removed, they can inflict damage to the gums and the bones that support your teeth!

If caught in its early stages, before damage has occurred, one or two regular cleanings can cure this gingivitis. In addition, you will receive instruction on how to improve your oral  hygiene and when to have regular dental cleanings. But when the disease has progressed to more advanced stages, when the disease has become periodontitis, and bone loss has occurred and diseased sulcus have formed.

Treatment options that include:
• Scaling and Root Planing
• Osseous (bone) surgery

• Laser Periodontal Therapy

So Why LASER therapy?
Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure  replaces the long- stablished scraping of the gums, root planing and old bone surgery involving scalpels, stitches, pain and grief.
With the laser, the doctor can remove only the diseased tissue and let healthy tissue remain.   During the procedure the laser passes two times while you undergo cleaning of the pockets with an ultrasonic technique. So in essence the laser light removes bacteria and diseased tissue between your gum and teeth.
Is there a lot of pain?
More than likely there will be NO pain during the procedure due to anesthesia to numb the area. The pain following post treatment is different than conventional surgery because in this case, the laser promotes the body’s healing. There will be some minor discomfort but those are easily fixed through analgesics.

How many appointments will it take?
The best way to remove the bacteria that cause the disease and keep it from spreading is to complete the treatment in two appointments
scheduled a week apart.

Diabetes and periodontitis
Long-established evidence suggests diabetes predisposes to periodontal disease and periodontal disease adversely affects diabetes outcomes. A study have found consistent evidence that severe periodontitis adversely affects sugar control in diabetic patients. The study concluded that diabetes and periodontitis are complex chronic diseases with established bidirectional  relationships.
